About the Department
Under the general supervision of the Streets & Facilities Supervisor, the employee will lead and coordinate the daily operation of the Traffic Sign Shop. This is a service maintenance position in the installation and maintenance of traffic and street signs and the application of pavement markers. This job is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment background check and random drug screens.
Position Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Work Crew Leader. Employee leads work crews in assigned traffic and street sign and pavement marker maintenance.
- Receives project assignments from supervisor.
- Instructs and directs sign technicians.
- Creates a program/schedule for the use of materials and associated equipment for sign and pavement marking projects.
- Ensure work crews observe safety standards and maintain a safe work environment.
- Maintains activity log accounting for time and materials of a project.
- Monitors and maintains inventory levels of sign materials and equipment, ensuring all necessary supplies are available for ongoing projects.
- Install and apply thermoplastic materials to road surfaces, ensuring accurate placement and alignment.
- Prepare surfaces for thermoplastic application by cleaning, and repair of asphalt or concrete if needed, to promote proper adhesion and longevity of markings.
- Operate and maintain specialized thermoplastic application equipment including melt kettles, striping machines, and other related tools.
- Inspect, repair, and maintain existing traffic signs and devices to ensure clarity and compliance.
- Replace damaged or faded signs as needed.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations regarding traffic signage.
- Ensure that all installations meet industry standards and specifications, for visibility, durability, and safety.
- Perform regular inspections of completed work to identify any deficiencies.
- Assists with City special events such as placing barricades and barriers.
- Assists with traffic control as assigned.
- Responds to emergency calls during hurricanes, inclement weather, or other emergency situations.
- Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Previous experience in thermoplastic application, pavement marking, or related field.
- Experience in traffic sign installation, maintenance, or a related role with two (2) years in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Possess a current and valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain this license within six (6) months of employment; must be insurable.
- Ability to work non-standard hours and be on-call.
- Ability to travel overnight.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen.

- Writing skills to clearly and neatly complete material lists, routine forms, and records using correct English, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
- Math skills to perform calculations related to construction and estimating.

Physical Demands
The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 lbs., crouching, or crawling in restricted areas.
