About the Department

This position performs technical duties in the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signals.

Position Duties

  • Installs, maintains, programs, and repairs traffic signal lights.
  • Constructs, repairs, and installs street signs.
  • Installs, maintains, programs, and repairs school flashing lights.
  • Manages contracts for the painting of streets and parking lots.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs Rapid Fire Beacon.
  • Conducts traffic counts; installs equipment and collects data.
  • Performs emergency repairs of traffic signals, including after work hours.
  • Performs related duties.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Knowledge of the Standard Highway Sign (SHS) Book.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of traffic signal equipment.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in interpreting schematic diagrams.
  • Skill in the use of electronic testing equipment.
  • Skill in problem solving.
  • Skill in prioritizing and planning.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Other Qualifications

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The City Engineer assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include state MUTCD and SHS book guidelines and department and city policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related technical duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the work.
  • The purpose of this position is to installs, maintain, and repair traffic signs and signals Successful performance contributes to the efficiency, effectiveness, and safety of city streets.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city personnel, vendors, contractors, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
  • The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to possession of a high school diploma or GED.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or obtain within six (6) months of employment and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the State of Wyoming.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain Flagger, Level I Signs and Markings, and Level I Traffic Signals certifications.
