Mount St. Joseph University is seeking a dynamic and dedicated individual to join our Computer Science Department as a Assistant Professor in Computer Science. This position is ideal for individuals who have a passion for teaching and mentorship and have a strong record in research methodology instruction, undergraduate student research experiences, and grant writing, as well as experience with web design and development. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in mentoring and engaging undergraduate students and will contribute to the department’s academic and research goals. The appointment will begin in January 2026 as a one-semester contract, with the possibility of renewal for the following academic year contingent upon performance and available funding.

 

Key Responsibilities

The contract assistant professor will:

  • Teach undergraduate-level courses in coding, web design, AI, AI ethics, and/or data analysis. The department is currently working to expand its AI and data analytics offerings, so expertise in Python, SQL, machine learning, statistics, and related technologies and fields is especially helpful.
  • Support the Department’s program-wide efforts to pivot traditional lecture-based courses toward project-based learning.
  • Develop relationships with industry partners for the purposes of project-based learning and experiential learning opportunities.
  • Mentor students through their research projects and cooperative education (co-op) experiences, ensuring the projects are aligned with current industry practices and research insights.
  • Direct and manage teams of student workers, ensuring effective collaboration and project execution within the department.
  • Contribute to the Department of Computing’s grant writing and research efforts.
  • Assist in student recruitment and engagement activities to enhance the undergraduate experience of students in the cITe Scholars Program.
  • Provide academic advising to students in the cITe Scholars Program.
  • Oversee and contribute to program administration tasks.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications


The candidate must have the following:

  • For rank of Assistant Professor, PhD in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computational Linguistics/NLP, Engineering or a related field.  For rank of instructor,  K12 teachers with a master’s degrees may be considered as well as industry professionals looking to transition to teaching. 
  • Strong methodological training.
  • Proven experience in conducting and managing research and development/social computing projects with undergraduate students (presenting or publishing academic work with students is ideal).
  • Possess expertise in teaching and fostering positive group dynamics within student working teams, aimed at enhancing their collaboration skills. This role involves actively guiding students in building effective partnerships with industry stakeholders, ensuring their success in real-world professional settings.
  • Experience in teaching at undergraduate level preferred.  Documented teaching, training or mentorship in other settings can also be considered.
  • Experience with web design and development.
  • Demonstrated ability in student recruitment, engagement, and academic advising.

  • Experience preparing proposals for externally funded grants.
  • Ability to innovate and integrate new technologies into teaching and research, as well as assist with curriculum development.
  • Strong organizational skills with a proven record of accomplishment in program administration.
  • Experience in teaching/using AI in research methods or related courses.
