2026 Public Theater Brooklyn College Government Affairs Fellowship 

The Brooklyn College Fellowship at The Public Theater offers full-time, paid administrative training opportunities to recent graduates from Brooklyn College for a duration of seven months. Made possible by the generous support and partnership of the Tow Foundation and the Miranda Family Fund, this program ensures that each Fellow is engrained within a specific Public Theater department related to their chosen discipline, providing them with robust professional development and network-building opportunities to help launch their careers.

The 2026 Public Theater Brooklyn College Fellowship includes: 

  • A structured, full-time, training opportunity at The Public Theater where Fellows will be assigned day-to-day tasks/long-term projects in support of and in collaboration with their selected department
  • Mentorship by an experienced staff member of The Public Theater 
  • Seminars, workshops, and additional networking opportunities designed to increase understanding of The Public’s operations and programming, guide professional development, and connect to the larger performing arts community
  • A salary of$28,846 disbursed bi-weekly at an hourly rate over the seven-month fellowship period(Monday, February 2, 2026 – Friday, August 28, 2026)at The Public
  • Access to healthcare benefits 

The Government Affairs Fellow will gain firsthand experience at the intersection of arts, culture, and public policy. Working alongside the Chief of Staff and the Government and Administrative Affairs Specialist, the Fellow will learn how a major nonprofit theater engages with City, State, and Federal government partners to sustain and grow its mission. The Fellow will have the opportunity to observe and support advocacy initiatives, public funding processes, and civic partnerships that help make The Public Theater’s work accessible to all New Yorkers.


Departmental Responsibilities:   

 
Throughout their fellowship, the Fellow will
: 

  • Assist with the preparation of materials for government funding requests, legislative testimony, and special briefings.
  • Contribute to research on elected officials, community partners, and policy initiatives impacting arts and cultural sector.
  • Assist with planning and logistics for government meetings, site visits, and special events.
  • Support the coordination of The Public’s participation in hearings, advocacy days, and other civic activities.
  • Attend internal meetings and debriefs to understand how arts advocacy aligns with broader institutional goals.
  • Perform data analysis on zip codes/districts served by Public Theater programming to support case making

 

Professional Development/Training Events:  

  • Attend weekly Fellow meetings with Public Theater staff members
  • Attend monthly professional development workshops, as well as additionally scheduled networking and/or training events
  • Full participation in professional development activities as assigned by The Public
  • Meet monthly with assigned Public Theater mentor

 

The Ideal Fellow possesses: 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interest in government structures (City, State, and Federal) and interest in arts or nonprofit advocacy.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated punctuality and reliability in meeting deadlines and commitments.
  • Proactive and self-directed in completing tasks and identifying next steps.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Curiosity, discretion, and a collaborative spirit.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with databases (e.g., Excel or CRM systems) is a plus.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Please note: This role requires working primarily in an office environment, with occasional evening or weekend events. Some local travel within New York City may be required for meetings or site visits.

This is a non-exempt position according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.
