Purpose Of Role:

The role holder is responsible for providing effective support of projects/ operational support tasks, dealing with all relevant issues under the guidance of the manager. He/she provides support in the formulation of network, technology, systems and information strategy and evolution plans, and operational support policies and procedures. The role holder provides assistance in meeting business objectives, solving business problems and furthering business success by applying industry, applications and technical knowledge through the definition of high level solutions on projects or the development of operational processes and procedures. The role holder should leverage the experience of the relevant BT wide professional communities to discharge these responsibilities, thus ensuring knowledge sharing extends beyond the functional boundary of the role. The role holder may also play a key part in the BT wide professional communities. 

Key Responsibilities: 

❑ To provide analytical and innovative input to projects/operational support tasks as well as support negotiations.

❑ Assists transformation strategy for a network or technology discipline in own area of expertise.

❑ Would normally lead on a specific deliverable of a small/medium scale project or implement smaller less complex projects to achieve required business benefits and manage to budget, timescales and quality.

❑ Could be responsible for direct line managing and developing of Analysts, but more likely to indirectly manage people to deliver specific tasks or projects.

❑ To contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures.

❑ To ensure operational procedures are in place, maintained and followed as appropriate.

❑ To input to cost/timescale solutions/options and manage expectations as appropriate with customer or Business Unit/LoB teams and may have responsibility for setting up work packages.

❑ May involve liaising with internal, external and third party suppliers.

❑ To personally participate in and contribute to BT wide professional community activities where applicable e.g. knowledge sharing, best practice within BT and external industry.

❑ To use the relevant BT wide professional community framework to raise their skills and those of their team to the recommended PC standards. 

 

Qualifications:

❑ May have a degree qualification (engineering/science) or has served a technical apprenticeship and/or obtained NVQ and/or further education technical qualifications (i.e. HND).

❑ Qualified to be and possibly member of a professional engineering/science institution and working towards chartered engineer accreditation.

❑ Relevant professional experience.

❑ CCNP or equivalent Certification

❑ Creates informal networks with key contacts within own area.

❑ Has a comprehensive understanding of professional communities relevant to the LOB and uses the PC development framework to maximise the potential of themselves, their team and the wider BT team

The Field Engineering Professional leads the planning, coordination, and delivery of network infrastructure projects, ensuring service continuity, stakeholder alignment, and compliance with safety, quality, and commercial standards.

What you’ll be doing

1.Manages end-to-end infrastructure projects, from initial survey and design through to execution, ensuring alignment with customer requirements and internal standards.
2. Coordinates with internal teams and external stakeholders to plan and deliver network changes that support development or infrastructure upgrades.
3. Oversees project documentation, cost estimation, and scheduling, ensuring timely approvals and accurate financial tracking.
4. Acts as a key point of contact for customer engagement, resolving queries, managing escalations, and maintaining visibility of project timelines
5. Supports field teams and contractors during delivery, providing technical guidance and ensuring quality and safety compliance.
6. Conducts site audits and monitors performance to ensure adherence to operational, legal, and environmental standards.
7. Maintains accurate records and updates workflow systems with project progress, stakeholder communications, and documentation.
8. Leads resolution of complaints and disputes related to infrastructure projects, including coordination with public bodies and regulatory authorities.
9. Ensures technicians follow Field Engineering�s customer service standard levels and ensures the visibility and robustness of frameworks that hold engineers accountable to those standards.
10. Provides subject matter expertise and mentoring to colleagues and partners, supporting continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
11. Participates in the on-call activities for field services including incident resolution within SLA, in and out of business hours.
12. Ensures all work complies with relevant legislation, internal policies, and industry codes of practice, safeguarding network integrity and commercial interests.
