Position Summary
The Quality Manager will lead the development and execution of Sherman + Reilly’s Quality Management System (QMS), focusing on supplier quality, manufacturability, and continuous improvement. This role partners closely with Engineering, Supply Chain, and Operations to drive design-for-manufacture, ensure compliance, and elevate the overall customer experience across manufacturing, rental, and service operations.
The Quality Manager reports to the Director of Supply Chain, Quality, and IT and will work collaboratively across all departments and levels of the organization.
Requirements
Quality Management System & Compliance
Own, maintain, and continuously improve the company QMS, ensuring robust documentation and compliance.
Oversee calibration and traceability of key inspection and process instruments.
Manage Nonconforming Material (NCM) and Corrective/Preventive Action (CAPA) systems, driving root cause analysis and systemic improvements.
Define and report on key metrics including Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) and defect trends.
Supplier Quality & Sourcing
Develop and manage the supplier quality lifecycle: qualification, first article inspection (FAI), PPAP, ongoing performance, and corrective actions.
Partner with Supply Chain to implement receiving inspection plans, supplier scorecards, and sourcing strategies that improve flexibility and lead time.
Conduct supplier audits, focusing on welding, machining, hydraulics, and electrical assembly capabilities.
New Product Introduction (NPI) & Design Quality
Embed quality into new designs through DFMEA/PFMEA facilitation, tolerance stack-ups, and manufacturability reviews.
Develop control plans, inspection methods, and acceptance criteria for new products.
Deploy 3D optical metrology (e.g., Keyence or equivalent) for in-process, first-article, and final inspections.
Manufacturing & Service Support
Provide daily quality support for two Chattanooga manufacturing sites.
Lead defect triage, rework standards, and inspection plan optimization.
Partner with Service to investigate field failures and warranty trends, ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
Oversee materials testing and issue Certificates of Conformance (CoC) as needed.
Data, Systems & Reporting
Manage inspection plans, NCR/CAPA records, and traceability within ERP systems (SAP ByDesign preferred).
Maintain dimensional and CMM data, FAIRs, and supplier submissions.
Publish regular quality dashboards, supplier scorecards, and performance summaries.
Leadership & Culture
Lead and develop a small Quality team, fostering accountability and a culture of data-driven problem solving.
Train cross-functional teams in quality tools and methodologies.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing, or related technical field (advanced degree preferred).
7+ years of experience in manufacturing quality for complex electromechanical equipment, vehicles, or industrial machinery.
Strong background in QMS, NCM/CAPA, supplier quality (FAI, PPAP/APQP), and structured problem-solving (8D/5-Why).
Proficiency in metrology, GD&T, and special process auditing (welding, machining, hydraulics, electrical assembly).
Experience with 3D optical scanning and mechanical testing (Olsen, Rockwell, Brinell).
ERP proficiency required; SAP ByDesign experience strongly preferred.
ASQ CQE or CQA certification preferred.
Excellent communication and cross-functional leadership skills.
Work Environment & Travel
Onsite role supporting two Chattanooga manufacturing facilities.
Travel up to ~15% to suppliers, customers, and service/rental locations.
