The primary duties for the Utility Worker I, assigned to the Construction Crew are:

  • Installs water services, fire hydrants, air release valves, water valves, and restraining devices.
  • Flushes water mains and dead end lines based on water sample results and a flushing schedule and responds to flow and pressure related concerns to perform necessary testing and repairs.
  • Repairs water main breaks, replacing broken pipes, connecting new pipes to existing pipes, and installing and repairing water services.  
  • Installs customer service lines and water valves in a variety of sizes appropriate to customer’s water meter and completes repairs of water valves in various sizes.
  • Monitors water main taps in a variety of sizes and maintains level oils.
  • Inspects, installs, maintains, tests, and removes water meters. 

This position is covered in the Teamsters bargaining unit and incumbents must live within a 30 minute drive of their regularly assigned work site.  Hours of work will be Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Position Duties

Utility Worker I Minimum Qualifications:
Hourly Wage $21.8494 to $27.6466

A High School Diploma or equivalent and 1 year of related experience, are required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed in the job description.

  • A valid Oregon Driver's License Class C is required at time of hire and a motorcycle endorsement may be required.
Within 12 months of appointment incumbents are required to obtain:
  • Oregon Certified Flagger
  • Valid Oregon Commercial Driver’s License Class B with ­­­­tanker endorsement
Within 18 months of appointment incumbents are required to obtain:
  • Forklift Certificate
Utility Worker II Minimum Qualifications:
Hourly Wage $23.4884 to $29.7200

A High School Diploma or equivalent and 2 years of directly related experience in a utility environment are required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed in the job description.

Licensing/Certification Requirements (positions in this class require at time of hire):

  • Valid Oregon Driver’s License Class C and Commercial Driver’s License Class B with tanker endorsement
  • Forklift Certificate
  • Oregon Certified Flagger (excluding Water Restoration)
  • Oregon Health Authority (OHA) DWS Water Distribution II Certificate
  • Backflow Inspector or Tester Certificate

Other Qualifications

The ranking and selection of applicants to proceed in the process includes: experience and knowledge, education, responses to supplemental questionnaire, submission of required materials and meeting minimum qualifications and special qualifications of the position.
