The Oncology Data Specialist performs case finding, abstracting and follow-up on cancer patients using current national and state reporting criteria within required time frame to ensure that timely, accurate, and complete data are maintained on all types of cancer diagnosed and/or treated within a health care institution or within a defined population. He/she communicates and collaborates inter and intra departmentally with a variety of professionals and regulatory agencies to fulfill the duties of the role.
Responsibilities
- Maintains cancer registry files for facility.
- Codes and abstracts cancer-related data as per procedure established by applicable registry operations and data standards.
- Summarizes patient’s hospital record for completion, including demographic information, diagnostic information, histological information, and therapy rendered into the abstracting system.
- Applies staging according to current staging schemes and supports staging judgment to physicians and regulatory agencies.
- Reports all new cases to the cancer registry through the computerized registry system.
- In accordance with the American College of Surgeons (ACOS), Commission on Cancer (COC) guidelines, maintains registry files and logs of all hospital cancer cases.
- Conducts follow-up.
- Assists with the hospital’s organization of cancer program activities.
- Additional responsibilities
- Assist in creating the annual report of activity and study for the Cancer Committee
- Maintain communication within the hospital, with state and registry, and ACOS, as appropriate.
- Remains abreast of development and continued education in the field of cancer registry by pursuing a program of self-development.
Qualifications
Minimum Education
- Associates Degree Health Information Management Required or
- Technical Diploma/Certificate Health Information Management Required
Minimum Work Experience
- 2 years experience in Cancer Registry Required
Licenses and Certifications
- Oncology Data Specialist (ODS_NCRA) Upon Hire Required
- BLS for Healthcare Providers (BLS) American Heart Association Upon Hire Required
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Continued education in the areas of Cancer trends, disease staging, coding, classification systems and statistical tabulation and analysis.
- Demonstrates flexibility via an ability to adapt to changing priorities and regulations.
- Basic computer skills.
