OVERVIEW ::

The Live Staff Accountant is responsible for the accurate and timely accounting of live production costs and detailed analysis of cost in cents per good live pound. This position ensures that all live-related costs—from chick placement through bird delivery to processing—are captured, reconciled, and reported accurately. The role partners closely with Live Production, Feed Mill, and Processing teams to provide cost visibility, identify variances, and support performance improvement across the live production cycle.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS ::

Live Cost Accounting & Cost per Good Live Pound Analysis

• Calculate and record all components of live production cost, including:

• Chick, feed, medication, vaccination, and supply costs

• Grower payments, bonuses, and settlements

• Catching, hauling, and mortality costs

• Flock adjustments and transfers between farms or complexes

• Compile and analyze cost in cents per good live pound, identifying key cost drivers and variances versus budget and standard.

• Reconcile flock and complex-level data to ensure accuracy of live pounds produced and pounds processed.

• Partner with Live Operations to validate good live weight and flock performance data impacting cost results.

• Provide regular reporting on trends in feed conversion, mortality, and other factors affecting cents per good live pound.

 

Period-End Close & Reporting

• Prepare and post journal entries related to live production, feed, and grower expenses.

• Reconcile balance sheet accounts related to live operations (feed, grower payables, live inventory, etc.).

• Prepare monthly and quarterly summaries of live costs and performance metrics expressed in cents per good live pound.

• Support month-end close, ensuring all live-related transactions are captured and accurately reflected in financial statements.

• Assist with live cost forecasting and annual budget preparation.

 

Operational Support & Continuous Improvement

• Collaborate with live production managers to ensure timely and accurate reporting of placements, transfers, and settlements.

• Support variance analysis discussions and help operations understand cost fluctuations.

• Maintain accurate documentation of live accounting processes and improve efficiency in data collection and reporting.

• Support internal and external audits related to live operations and inventory.

 

REQUIREMENTS ::

Desired Qualifications

  • Education:Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field 
  • Experience:
  • 2–5 years of accounting experience, in poultry, livestock, or manufacturing industries.
  • Experience with cost accounting, inventory accounting, and production analysis preferred.

Technical Skills:

• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, data analysis).

• Experience with ERP/accounting systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, JDE, or similar).

• Strong analytical and reconciliation skills.

Other Skills:

• Detail-oriented and highly organized.

• Ability to communicate effectively with operations and management.

• Comfortable working with large datasets and multiple operational inputs.

Working Conditions

• Office environment with periodic visits to live production sites, feed mills, and processing facilities.

• Occasional overtime required during period-end close or audit cycles.
