About the Department

Be part of a South St. Paul tradition by helping maintain one of the community’s most iconic facilities — the Doug Woog Ice Arena — as a Zamboni Driver/Operations Staff member.

The Zamboni Driver/Operations Staff member assists in maintaining the Doug Woog Ice Arena, including the upkeep of the facility, ice surface, and surrounding grounds. This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Zamboni and related equipment, ensuring a clean, safe, and enjoyable environment for all arena users.

Typical schedule consists working up to 14 hours per week, which will include evening and weekends.

Position Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate the Zamboni machine and related equipment to maintain quality ice conditions.
• Maintain ice surface including resurfacing, edging, and cleaning dasher boards, glass, and player areas.
• Operate various equipment including ice resurfacing machines, hand tools, and power tools safely and in compliance with training.
• Assist with set up and tear down equipment and seating for events, programs, and rentals.
• Perform snow/ice removal and light groundskeeping around the facility, as assigned.
• Perform routine facility custodial duties such as cleaning, trash removal, and general sanitation, as assigned.
• Monitor facility safety and security; report hazards or repair needs promptly.
• Provide courteous assistance to patrons and ensure compliance with facility rules.
• Follow City, State of Minnesota, and federal workplace safety standards including OSHA requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• 18 years of age or older.
• Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions in English.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Previous experience in an arena, recreation, or facility maintenance setting preferred.
• Prior experience operating a Zamboni desired.

Other Qualifications

Working Conditions

• Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments, including exposure to cold temperatures on the ice rink, cleaning chemicals, noise, and occasional incisional inclement weather.
• May require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as provided by the City.

Employment Requirements

• Employment is subject to a background check in compliance with City policy and applicable state/federal law.
• Must complete required safety and equipment training.
