In this role you will be responsible for evaluating the overall creditworthiness of applicants and making sound lending decisions in alignment with the credit union's policies, regulatory requirements, and risk tolerance. This position performs comprehensive credit analysis on direct and indirect consumer loan applications, including reviewing credit reports, income verification, employment stability, debt obligations, collateral valuation, and overall financial capacity. The Underwriter analyzes financial ratios such as debt-to-income and loan-to-value to determine eligibility and appropriate loan terms. In addition to credit decisioning, this role supports an efficient lending process by working closely with indirect dealers and internal lending staff. The Underwriter provides clear and timely communication regarding approvals, declines, stipulations, and documentation requirements. This includes responding to decision questions, addressing missing information, and ensuring that loan files have all the necessary documentation, and are compliant. The Consumer Loan Underwriter is expected to exercise sound judgement, balance member service with responsible risk management, and contribute to a positive and collaborative relationship with internal lending staff, and dealer partners.

Reporting: Onsite at 42 Union Street Sidney NY.

Compensation: $23.80-$26.78/hr

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Process and underwrite consumer loans, including personal, auto, credit card and other secured loans in accordance with Credit Union policy which come in through various channels, such as email, internet, phone, indirect or in-branch requests.

Collaborate effectively with branch personnel, Indirect Dealer Partners, Loan Funders and Servicers, to ensure that loan applications are fully completed, include the necessary supporting documentation and the loan closes as scheduled.

Analyze loan applicants' financial status and credit to determine feasibility of granting loan.

Approve consumer loans within authorized limits and communicate decisions to branch personnel and/or indirect dealer; recommend approval or denial for those in excess of authorized limits.

Collaborate across all lending and member facing departments to foster a cohesive, high performing team environment.

Work together with all areas of lending and member services to ensure an efficient, effective team-based division.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills:

Experience:

Two to four years of Consumer Lending underwriting, or related financial services experience is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have working knowledge of consumer lending regulations, fair lending practices, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and general industry guidelines. Experience with indirect lending, credit analysis, or loan decisioning systems is a plus.

Education:

A high school education or GED. A bachelor's degree in business, finance or related areas, is preferred but not required. Relevant lending or underwriting experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Interpersonal Skills:

Courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are essential elements of the job. Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the organization for purposes of giving or obtaining information, building relationships, or soliciting cooperation. An underwriter must also be analytical, be able to evaluate the financial information presented and demonstrate some flexibility in applying lending criteria.

Other Skills:

Working knowledge of Consumer Lending regulations including but not limited to Truth in Lending Act, Equal Credit Opportunity Act, and Fair Credit Reporting Act

Proficiency in analyzing credit bureau reports

Strong decision making and risk assessment skills

Effective written and verbal communication skills

Strong attention to accuracy and detail

Valid National Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) Registration.
