Associate Program Chair - Life & Physical Sciences Laboratory Manager
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Life and Physical Sciences Laboratory Manager is a full-time faculty position with both teaching and administrative responsibilities. The individual serves as the primary manager of the University’s science laboratories, ensuring safety, quality, and effective operations. Key functions include overseeing laboratory facilities and equipment, supervising supporting faculty and students in laboratory-based courses, maintaining compliance with safety standards, and teaching up to eight (8) courses per academic year. The Laboratory Manager supports academic excellence by ensuring the smooth operation of the laboratories, providing guidance on course delivery, and collaborating with colleagues across the School of Arts & Sciences. This 12-month position requires an on-campus presence at our Waterbury, CT campus.
Essential Accountabilities:
Laboratory and Safety Management
· Oversee day-to-day operations of all science laboratories, including equipment procurement, inventory, setup, and maintenance.
· Act as Laboratory Safety Officer; organize and conduct annual laboratory safety training; maintain safety documentation and compliance records.
· Supervise and train student lab assistants and provide support to faculty teaching laboratory courses.
· Ensure safe, efficient, and effective use of laboratory resources.
· Create and manage the science laboratory budget.
Faculty and Academic Support
· Collaborate with Associate Faculty and full-time faculty to ensure high-quality laboratory instruction.
· Provide guidance on laboratory activities, safety protocols, and course delivery.
· Support assessment of student learning outcomes in laboratory courses for continuous improvement.
· Assist with addressing and resolving student concerns, grade appeals, or laboratory-related issues.
Teaching
· Teach up to eight (8) courses per academic year within the Life and Physical Sciences.
· Develop and revise course content and laboratory instruction as appropriate to maintain currency and relevance.
· Incorporate best practices in teaching and learning, with an emphasis on student engagement and success.
· Maintain familiarity with current laboratory texts, materials, and teaching aids.
Institutional Engagement
· Participate in at least two university committees or as otherwise determined by the Chair of Life and Physical Sciences and Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences.
· Collaborate with colleagues in Academic Affairs, Advising, and Student Success to support students’ academic progress and goals.
· Assist with internal and external reporting requirements as needed.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
· Other duties as assigned by the Chair of Life and Physical Sciences, Dean, or Academic Affairs leadership.
Minimum Qualifications & Competencies:

Qualifications:
· Doctoral degree preferred; master’s degree in a scientific discipline required.
· Minimum of 3–5 years of professional or academic experience in the sciences.
· Demonstrated successful teaching experience at the college/university level.
· Proficiency in laboratory safety protocols and compliance with OSHA and BSL-2 standards.
· Experience with instructional technology and teaching online.
· Strong commitment to student learning and success; student-focused approach.
· Experience in laboratory operations, including equipment maintenance and procurement.
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.
· Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
