Job Description
This position will perform a wide range of duties in support of the District’s invasive and nuisance plant management program. The incumbent will plan and coordinate invasive plant control operations in natural areas and project lands. In addition to providing technical oversight of invasive species management projects, the incumbent will review contractor deliverables, track purchase orders, and plan/monitor budgets. The incumbent will also assist with the District’s invasive plant monitoring program, data analysis, report writing, and participate on interagency coordination teams. This position reports to a Senior Supervising Scientist in the Vegetation Management Section.
Field experience with invasive plant species identification, monitoring, control, and management is preferred. Knowledge of South Florida ecosystems and their flora—both native and non-native—is required. Familiarity with geospatial software, data management, and analytics is preferred.
The incumbent must have excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to plan and self-manage heavy workloads; enthusiasm; a temperament for dealing with harsh field conditions; and a willingness and commitment to actively contribute to a collaborative teamwork effort.
Applicants must have an education background and practical work experience in applied ecology and management of vegetation in natural areas, demonstrated ability to design and analyze related field studies, good verbal and written communication skills, ability to plan and manage heavy workloads, enthusiasm and temperament for dealing with harsh field conditions, and willingness and commitment to actively contribute to a collaborative team work effort.
Education/Experience Guidelines (May be filled as Scientist 3)
Scientist 4: Bachelor’s Degree in Natural or Physical Sciences and 4+ years of related experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within the scientific discipline that can be applied to support the District’s strategic goals and objectives.
The salary range for this position is $64,126.40 to $70,366.40 (based on education and years of relevant work experience).
Scientist 3: Bachelor’s Degree in Natural or Physical Sciences and 2+ years of related experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within the scientific discipline that can be applied to support the District’s strategic goals and objectives.
The salary range for this position is $58,884.80 to $64,521.60 (based on education and years of relevant work experience).
Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Licenses
Valid State of Florida Driver’s License. Possession or ability to acquire within 180 days State of Florida pesticide applicators license with Aquatic and Natural Areas certification. District airboat certification will be required within 180 days of hire.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment
The work environment is a combination of field work (60%) and office work (40%), with regular exposure to a hot and humid environment in remote and heavy vegetative areas, with exposure to stinging/biting insects, snakes, and alligators. May be required to lift up to 60 lbs.
Additional physical requirements include agility, balancing, basic water skills and ability to swim, driving vehicles, kneeling, moving/transporting equipment, walking through rough terrain, working in, on, or near water.
Due to the District’s response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies. This position is a member of the Emergency Debris Operations Team.
