Job Description

The Director of Public Affairs and Communications leads Tricon Residential's reputation management, government engagement, public affairs, and strategic communications across North American markets. This role manages relationships with elected officials, policymakers, and regulators at the municipal, state/provincial, and federal levels while building relationships with journalists, media outlets, and key stakeholders. The Director of Public Affairs and Communications shapes public narratives around Tricon's role in the housing continuum, manages all aspects of public affairs including media relations and crisis communications, and ensures brand consistency across all external communications. This position oversees a communications team and ensures all public affairs and government relations activities align with strategic direction and protect organizational reputation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Brand & Reputation Management

  • Monitor brand perception across internal and external stakeholder groups including employees, investors, government officials, community partners, residents, and media.

  • Track brand and reputation sentiment across multiple channels and provide leadership with actionable insights on reputational risks and opportunities.

  • Monitor the external environment including policy shifts, public sentiment, competitive positioning, and media coverage to identify emerging reputational risks and opportunities for proactive engagement.

  • Ensure brand consistency and message alignment across all public affairs activities, government relations, corporate communications, and press materials.

Government Relations & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Develop and execute government relations strategies across municipal, state/provincial, and federal levels in both Canadian and US markets, building relationships with elected officials, legislative staff, and regulatory agencies to advance Tricon's policy priorities and educate decision-makers on the company's role in the housing continuum.

  • Serve as primary liaison between Tricon and government stakeholders, coordinating tours, briefing sessions, policy roundtables, and public announcements that demonstrate the company's contributions to housing supply and responsible property management.

  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments impacting the residential rental sector, providing strategic counsel to leadership on policy implications, business risks, and opportunities.

  • Build and maintain coalitions with industry associations, housing advocates, community organizations, and policy institutes to amplify Tricon's voice on housing policy issues and strengthen the company's credibility as a responsible corporate citizen.

Public Affairs & Media Relations

  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with tier-one media contacts across national business publications, real estate trade media, housing policy reporters, and regional outlets, working with external agency partners to secure high-profile media placements and thought leadership opportunities.

  • Monitor media coverage across traditional and digital channels using advanced platforms to track brand mentions, analyze sentiment, and provide daily updates on coverage impacting organizational reputation.

  • Respond rapidly to media inquiries with strategic assessment of story angles, journalist credibility, and potential organizational impact while maintaining professional relationships and advancing company messaging.

  • Create and distribute press releases, media advisories, and multimedia content that effectively communicate company announcements, market insights, policy positions, and executive perspectives.

  • Support development and execution of crisis communication protocols including stakeholder notification, message coordination, and real-time media response to protect organizational reputation.

  • Analyze competitive media coverage and industry trends to identify opportunities for thought leadership positioning and proactive public engagement that differentiates Tricon in the marketplace.

  • Develop proactive public engagement strategies for external stakeholders including government agencies, community partners, and industry associations to strengthen Tricon's visibility and credibility.

Strategic Communications & Narrative Development

  • Shape public narratives that position Tricon as a partner in addressing housing affordability, supply constraints, and quality rental housing, translating business operations into stories about community impact.

  • Develop communications strategies that educate policymakers, media, and the public about the residential rental sector's role in the housing ecosystem.

  • Create thought leadership content including op-eds, white papers, policy briefs, speeches, and speaking opportunities that establish Tricon executives as credible voices on housing policy and market dynamics.

  • Lead issues management and rapid response efforts for policy controversies, regulatory challenges, and reputational risks, coordinating cross-functional response teams and maintaining message discipline under pressure.

  • Coordinate cross-functional teams during major announcements to ensure message consistency across all communication channels while managing approval workflows and stakeholder alignment.

  • Develop internal communications that keep employees informed of company positioning, policy developments, government relations activities, and media coverage.

Strategic Planning & Team Leadership

  • Partner with the Head of Strategic Initiatives to align corporate affairs, public affairs, and government relations priorities with overall business strategy.

  • Manage annual budget for public affairs, corporate communications, and government relations including vendor relationships, media monitoring tools, government relations consultants, and distribution services.

  • Mentor and develop communications team members, fostering professional growth and ensuring high-quality work product.

Qualifications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to craft compelling narratives for diverse audiences including media, policymakers, and stakeholders.

  • Experience in public affairs, government relations, and stakeholder engagement, ideally within real estate, housing, or a similarly regulated industry.

  • Background working in government offices (ministerial, legislative, executive, or regulatory roles) or political environments with demonstrated ability to navigate complex political landscapes.

  • Ability to translate complex policy and regulatory developments into clear communications for executive and external audiences.

  • Advanced proficiency in media monitoring platforms including Meltwater and Cision for coverage tracking and journalist relationship management.

  • Strong relationship-building skills with government officials, journalists, community stakeholders, and industry partners; demonstrated diplomacy and discretion in sensitive situations.

  • Demonstrated crisis communication and issues management experience with ability to make rapid decisions under pressure while maintaining message discipline.

  • Ability to prepare senior leadership for government meetings and support media training for executive spokespeople.

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Business, Finance, Real Estate, or related field.

  • 7-10 years progressive public relations experience with minimum 4 years in media relations roles.

Preferred Attributes: 

  • Extensive experience working across US and Canadian markets with deep understanding of cross-border media landscape and regulatory environments.

  • Advanced degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Policy, Public Administration, Business, Real Estate, or related field.

  • Experience in publicly traded companies with strong understanding of investor relations protocols and financial communications requirements.

  • Experience working at multiple levels of government (municipal, state/provincial, federal).

  • Experience serving as spokesperson or press secretary in government or corporate settings.
