Position: Dry Kiln Utility
Reports to: Dry Kiln Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Overview:
The Dry Kiln Utility is responsible for supporting the efficient operation of lumber drying kilns by performing essential ground-level tasks. This role involves preparing and handling lumber units, monitoring drying processes, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
Responsibilities:
- Laying Dunnage: place dunnage accurately to support and stabilize lumber stacks for drying and storage.
- Banding Units: secure dried lumber units using appropriate banding materials to ensure safe handling and transport.
- Hot Checks: conduct temperature and moisture content checks on lumber during and after kiln cycles to ensure drying standards are met.
- Unit Marking: clearly label and mark lumber units with identifying information such as dimension, date, and kiln location.
- Clean-Up: maintain cleanliness and organization around the kilns and yard, including sweeping, debris removal, and general upkeep.
- Assist Kiln Operations: help with loading and unloading kilns, monitor kiln performance, and report any issues or irregularities to supervisors.
- Safety Compliance: follow all safety protocols and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Experience in a lumber yard or industrial setting is a plus.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work in outdoor environments.
- Basic understanding of kiln drying processes is beneficial.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends or overtime as needed.
