Serves as a team lead in an advanced technical role responsible for the coordination, support, and optimization of Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS/CPACS), Radiology Information Systems (RIS), Cardiology Information Systems (CVIS), ancillary systems, and imaging workflows. The Senior PACS Administrator leads enterprise imaging initiatives, mentors team members, and advises clinical and IT leadership. This role directs the work of the Imaging team by assigning tasks, monitoring progress, and providing guidance without formal managerial responsibilities while collaborating with radiology, cardiology, IT, and vendor partners to ensure imaging technologies are reliable, optimized, and aligned with organizational goals.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Application Skills and Imaging Systems Expertise
Serves as the subject matter expert for PACS/CPACS, RIS, CVIS, and related systems.
Demonstrates strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to resolve complex imaging system issues, evaluating their impact on workflows, clinical operations, and system performance.
Coordinates the configuration, maintenance, testing, and support of imaging applications.
Leads troubleshooting and resolution of system issues involving DICOM routing, HL7 integration, modality worklists, and data integrity.
Oversees disaster recovery planning, backup procedures, and storage lifecycle management.
Participates in imaging equipment installations and integrations, ensuring connectivity and workflow alignment.
Develops reports, monitors licensing utilization, and prepares recommendations for budget planning.
Maintains documentation related to system configurations, upgrades, change management, and standard operating procedures.
Team Coordination and Workflow Leadership
Directs day-to-day task assignments, monitors progress and manages issue escalations within the PACS team.
Provides coaching, mentorship, and onboarding support to current and new team members.
Coordinates deliverables for system changes, enhancements, or infrastructure upgrades, ensuring deadlines are met.
Offers workflow and process improvement recommendations to the Manager, PACS Imaging
Clarifies that the role does not include formal HR supervision (e.g., hiring, performance evaluations, or corrective actions).
Project Management
Leads imaging-related projects including system upgrades, software rollouts, workflow redesigns, or new modality integrations.
Develops project plans, timelines, and risk assessments in collaboration with clinical, IT, and vendor stakeholders.
Coordinates cross-functional project activities, ensuring alignment with goals and timely execution.
Tracks project status and communicate updates, risks, and outcomes to leadership.
Ensures testing, documentation, and training are completed for all project milestones.
Operational Support and Quality of Work
Manages daily monitoring of image routing, archiving, and system performance.
Provides escalation support for clinical incidents and demonstrates strong diagnostic and decision-making skills.
Administers user accounts, access controls, and security settings in compliance with IT and regulatory policies.
Supports audit readiness and ensures documentation is in place for accreditation and compliance standards.
Participates in the on-call rotation and responds effectively to urgent or emergency issues.
Customer Service and Communication
Acts as a liaison between clinical users, imaging staff, IT, and vendors to support optimized workflows.
Provides training, education, and documentation for clinical stakeholders during upgrades or workflow changes.
Maintains timely, accurate communication with colleagues, leadership, and vendor partners.
Promotes collaboration and responsiveness in support of patient-centered imaging services.
Other Functions:
Participates in On-Call rotation.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Travel Required:
Travel is expected to be between 0% - 50% of the time and may vary based on project or organizational needs.
Qualifications
Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university and a minimum of five (5) years of healthcare IS experience with a focus on imaging systems
OR
Seven (7) years of radiology or cardiology imaging system experience with documented enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program and expected completion within 36 months of hire.
AND
Certified Imaging Informatics Professional (CIIP) or Certified PACS Associate (CPAS)
Required Certifications & Licensures:
Must maintain Certified Imaging Informatics Professional (CIIP) or Certified PACS System Analyst (CPSA) certification.
