DEPARTMENT: Water and Sewer, City of Rocky Mount
JOB SUMMARY: This position is supervises and participates in the work of a water and sewer system maintenance crew.
Position Duties
- Plans, assigns and supervises the daily work of assigned staff engaged in water & sewer construction and repair.
- Plans and supervises construction and maintenance projects involving water & sewer utilities in a safe and productive manner.
- Supervises subordinate staff ensuring efficient productivity, safety and compliance to policy and regulations.
- Coordinate equipment and materials use among crews, supervise and operate heavy equipment on projects.
- Trains, supervises, evaluates, and disciplines personnel.
- Assist with record and time keeping of subordinate staff.
- Responds to after-hours emergency situations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- This position will require a minimum of three years verified supervisory experience in Water & Sewer construction and maintenance.
- Verified experience in the operation of heavy equipment, excavator back-hoe.
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with three years to five years' experience or service.
- Possession of a Class A CDL or a class B with the ability and requirement to obtain a class A CDL within 12 months.
- Ability to obtain entry certifications in collections and distribution within 18 months of employment.

- Extensive knowledge of water and sewer utility construction, repair, and maintenance.
- Extensive skills and the operation of heavy and light equipment, excavators, back-hoes, tractors, chop saws, air compressors, asphalt saws ect.....

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The General Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include City policies and procedures and safety guidelines and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related supervisory and technical duties. Heavy traffic and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to supervise crews of personnel in the repair and maintenance of water and sewer utilities. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of system operations.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with other City personnel, inspectors, contractors, and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while typically standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, contagious diseases, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather.
