Monday - Friday from 3pm-11:30pm, no weekends, and no holidays.
Major Responsibilities:- Acts as a resource and role model to employees, which includes training/orienting, providing day-to-day work direction. Assigns, monitors, and reviews progress and accuracy of work, monitors productivity, maintains appropriate staffing levels, directs efforts and provides guidance on more complex issues.
- Assists with human resource responsibilities, which may include interviewing and selection of new employees, staff development, resolution of employee concerns, and employee morale. Assists in interpreting department policies and procedures, and advises and updates staff on procedural changes.
- Monitors and coordinates the workflow; this includes specimen processing, receiving and sorting specimens, performing computer data entry, and packaging and tracking specimens for transport.
- Assists in the investigation of procedure, process, and/or performance failures and aids in their resolution. Reviews and reports discrepancies to leadership. Documents appropriate information for quality assurance/improvement according to established protocol.
- Ensures that specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing. Resolves specimen identification and/or requisition problems and clarifies requests. Receives and sorts specimens and performs specimen storage and retrieval; processes specimens for testing, including aliquoting, pre-analytical steps, and loading instruments, while maintaining proper specimen identification.
- May perform limited testing under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) 1988 guidelines, according to established policies and procedures including quality control checks. Performs preventative maintenance on equipment and makes minor repairs when needed.
- May notify providers of stat, critical, and other abnormal results and exceptions as defined by policy and procedure.
- Obtains billing/insurance information and/or verifies diagnosis code information. Enters and verifies test requests into the laboratories' computer system.
- Answers telephone calls and transfers appropriately. Assists with inventory and ordering of supplies.
- Reviews various pending and management reports. Generates and distributes reports. Maintains and files copies of orders, reports and/or correspondence.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
- None Required.
Education Required:
- High School Graduate.
Experience Required:
- Typically requires 3 years of experience in a laboratory assistant position.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Demonstrated ability to lead a group of employees.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Basic computer skills including experience using computer software applications.
- Keyboarding and typing skills.
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously under general supervision.
- Demonstrated customer service skills to interface effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, and other internal and external customers.
- Demonstrates a willingness to work a flexible schedule, which may include working an alternate site or shift assignment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
- Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs. Occasionally lifts up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, and bend the majority of the workday.
- May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, radioactive and/or infectious agents.
- Will be exposed to human blood and body fluids.
- Must wear appropriate lab coat, gloves, gowns and eye and face protection as needed.
- Must be able to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
